Aaron Dunsmore made his debut for Edinburgh City on Saturday afternoon, playing in a comfortable 4-1 victory over Preston Athletic in the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League.
In his maiden game at Meadowbank, Dunsmore, 19, found himself playing as a right sided central defender, slightly different to his usual position of right-back.
Noted for his pace on the wings, and joining in with the attacks in the Hibernian Development Squad, Dunsmore found himself slightly more restrained. Instead of overlapping the right-midfielder, he found himself tucking in and playing the offside trap with his central defence partner.
Despite this, Dunsmore found himself pushing forward in a dominant performance from the league leaders, with a Ross Allum double helping Edinburgh City into a 2-0 half-time lead.
Speaking about finding himself at the heart of the defence, he said: “It is always good to develop new positions. I played centre-half when I was younger and the game for Edinburgh City was the first time I played there.
“I am comfortable there, and I have the belief in my own ability to play there, I’m glad it was a good performance.”
In the second half, Dunsmore found himself in an unusual situation, by becoming the designated corner taker – despite admitting he has no previous experience in that situation.
This led to him assisting a goal. A wicked in-swinging corner to the back post saw Jordan Caddow thump a header into the net.
The freedom to roam for the youngster continued, and he was able to assist further in attacks, before threading a neat through ball into the path of Dean Carse, who scored City’s fourth goal of the game.
Dunsmore was naturally delighted to have helped his new team-mate to three points, and is looking forward to implementing the skills he learned in the Development Squad to good effect in a first-team environment.
“What I have developed in the last few years with the Hibernian under-20s was to get forward and my pace is a good asset.
“Hopefully I am able to do that for Edinburgh City and get a few assists and goals for the team.
“The first assist was a corner. I’ve never taken a corner in my life! When I was asked to take them, it was a bit of a shock, but it was a good delivery and thankfully someone was on the end of it.
“The second assist was a good through-ball and that was finished well. I was just happy to get two assists.”
The most noticeable aspect of the game was the manner in which Edinburgh City kept control of the ball, and dictated play. The stereotype of teams playing in the Ferrari Packaging Lowland League and below is one of tactics based around hoofing long balls forward.
However, Gary Jardine’s side is based around keeping possession and not being afraid to come back to move forward, and searching for openings. This is something which Dunsmore likens to the way in which they play and train at Hibernian, which he believes is a positive for his spell.
He was also complementary of the welcome he received from his new team-mates, who have made him feel at home since joining on loan.
“The play is a lot like Hibs. The team like to keep the ball, play passes forward and move forward. I’m very happy to be there. It’s not too different in terms of playing style and there are good players here.
“A few of the boys are very close in the team, and they’ve taken me in with open arms. It’s great to be part of a team like that.”
Dunsmore is currently out on a Development Loan to Edinburgh City, which allows him to play in the Development Squad matches should he be required.
He featured for the Hibernian Development Squad in their recent match, which ended in a 1-0 defeat away to Aberdeen at Balmoor, the home of Peterhead.
Edinburgh City are next in action against Edinburgh University at Meadowbank, on Saturday 13 February, in the South Challenge Cup.
Edinburgh City FC are delighted to announce the loan signing of Hibernian FC's Under 20 defender Aaron Dunsmore.
